I once loved a lass

I once loved a lass

1.
I once loved a lass, loved her so well.
And hated all others who spoke of her ill.
And now she's rewarded me well for my love,
she's gone to be wed to another.

2.
I saw my love up to the church door.
Bridesgroom and bridesmaidens, they made a fine show.
I followed on with my heart full of woe.
She's gone to be wed to another.

3.
I saw my love as she sat down to dine.
I sat down beside her and poured out the wine.
I thought of a Lassie that should have been mine.
She's gone to be wed to another.

4.
The men in your forest, they asked of me.
How many strawberries grow in the salt sea.
I answered them with a tear in my eye.
How many ships sail in the forest.

5.
Dig me a grave and dig it so deep.
Cover it over with wee flowers so sweet.
And I'll lay me down to take a long sleep
And may be in time I'll forget her.
